This morning, we went back to the playground...but this time, we went with a purpose of meeting two other homeschooling families. Two moms both brought their children, so Stewart and Peyton had their first opportunity as homeschoolers to play with other kids their ages. They had a great time! The best part of the experience was shortly after the boys started playing together with a baseball bat and a wiffle ball. One of the little boys came up to me and said, "Umm...excuse me, Miss? I just wanted to tell you that your son can hit the ball really good! It goes really far!" What a great compliment! Stewart has never played baseball, yet this young man (who is an avid baseball player) taught Stewart how to hold the bat and how to hit the ball, and was apparently a very good teacher! I'm proud of both of the young men - Stewart for developing a new skill, and the other young man for not only being kind enough to teach my son, but also kind enough to share my son's success with me!
Academically speaking, we are continuing to adjust. Thankfully, both Stewart and Peyton are exhibiting strong work ethics at the moment. Stewart handled fractions like a champ today and Peyton was a social studies superstar! However, one of the most memorable moments came when we had an impromptu lesson on the differences between the terms kill, murder, and assassinate. Talk about something I never thought I'd discuss with my children!!! But Peyton had taken it upon herself to study a bit about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and she asked what "assassinate" meant...and the conversation flowed from there.
What a day!
